FSLC Interactive CD-Rom

 Preparing to take flight!
Right before the fly-over, footage was taken of what is to be expected.
Overview of Project:
The Friends of San Leandro Creek have produced an interactive CD-ROM that can be used as a teaching tool in San Leandro classrooms. It covers the physical characteristics of the Upper and Lower San Leandro Creek Watershed, with clickable film footage of sites along the creek. This allows students from San Leandro to view the upper watershed in its natural state and learn about the urban impacts to the creek through a comparison method. The CD-ROM also covers water quality and urban runoff issues, the Friends of San Leandro Creek, and some historical and cultural aspects of the creek. The CD-ROM contains flyover film footage of the entire San Leandro Creek watershed. Footage including students from Roosevelt Elementary and Bishop O’Dowd High School taking part in San Leandro Creek Watershed education activities. The photography and cinematography is visually stunning and is intended to elicit a strong sense of appreciation for the San Leandro Creek Watershed.

Value to the San Leandro Community:
This CD-ROM could be used within a school science or community awareness curriculum, and will give students a very personal exposure to their specific watershed issues. The CD-ROM will also be used for public information presentations and be available to the general public for loan or purchase. The content will be developed with volunteer support from local San Leandro educators and several local environmental organizations. The Environmental Services Department of the City of San Leandro and the Alameda County Public Works Agency will also be consulted for pollution and water quality information.

Process/ Funding:
A media production company (Mineral Films) has agreed to produce the CD-ROM at a substantial discount, due to the Friends of San Leandro Creeks non-profit status and value within the environmental community. Mineral Films will then use the finished product as an environmental education prototype within their own marketing department. Since the Friends of San Leandro Creek Board of Directors approval of the project, the Watershed Awareness Coordinator has obtained grant funds through various governmental agencies and environmental education foundations. Funders of the project to date include the City of San Leandro Environmental Services Department, the California Integrated Waste Management Board, the Alameda County Clean Water Program, the Strong Foundation for Environmental Values, and the National Geographic Society. Robert Tucknott of San Leandro, has generously donated the use his plane for the flyover footage.

Distribution:
Once completed, this CD-ROM will be available to teachers that have taken their classes on field trips with the Friends of San Leandro Creek, and also available as an in class presentation given by FSLC. Further distribution policy will be determined by the FSLC Board.
